Kondo Chihiro Drawings
Kondo Chihiro (1903–1995) was a prominent Japanese artist, known for his work in the early to mid-20th century. He was particularly renowned for his contributions to the world of nihonga (Japanese-style painting) and his development of a unique and innovative style that blended traditional Japanese techniques with modern influences.
Born in 1903, Kondo Chihiro studied at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts and trained in traditional Japanese painting techniques. He was influenced by Western modern art movements, but remained deeply connected to traditional Japanese culture, particularly nature, which remained a central theme in much of his work. He studied with Seison Maeda (1885 - 1977), considered one of the leaders of the Nihonga movement. Chihiro was one of 14 artists chosen to work on the reproduction of the historic murals in the Horyu-ji Temple built in the 7th century. This project was funded by the Japanese government in 1967.
