Woodblocks and Editioned Books
by Leon Loughridge
Woodblocks
Relief printing is one of the oldest forms of image reproduction with its roots as early as 500 in China. Through time, cultures and societies have used the medium for creative and institutional expression. The Ukiyo-e prints of Japan evolved from functional promotional posters to the elaborate woodblocks we admire today. Relief printing was the foundation of all publications in West Civilization until the late 1920's when commercial lithography became more economical.
